Town and Gown

Last week, the Wall Street Journal ran a brief article focused on the City of Mountain View and their relationship with Google.  The interactions between city hall and the largest employer in town are perhaps a bit more complicated than usual given Google’s handful of ground leases of city-owned dirt.

I frankly find the article a bit overblown.  I live in Mountain View, and therefore have both a personal and professional interest in these interactions.  While the city has pushed back over Google’s proposal to build a bridge through an environmentally sensitive recreation area, the relationship strikes me as fairly straightforward.  Negotiations over changes to allowable FARs in the area around Google’s HQ may change the dynamic, but the Journals’ article is premature.
