San Jose Mercury News: Too many electric cars, not enough workplace chargers creating tension on Silicon Valley tech campuses

The deployment of EV chargers around major Silicon Valley corporate campuses is an important piece in the success of this burgeoning industry.   I enjoyed an article on the topic in the Merc, and I’m fairly confident that within a few years it won’t be tough to top off your Tesla at most of the bigger companies in the Valley and on the Peninsula.

But what about multi-tenant buildings?   A bit tougher issue– instead of responding to concrete, quantifiable employee needs, multi-tenant property owners have to deploy expensive EV chargers on spec, anticipating demand, possibly for very small tenants.  It was four years ago that I first had a tenant I was working with ask about a charger for his Electric Vehicle– while we did figure out a solution, we were met with a deer-in-the-headlights look from the management of a major Mountain View office park when we brought this up– it matched the look I had when the client asked for this to be part of our offer!

I represent the ownership of what I think is the only building in downtown Palo Alto that offers EV chargers in a private garage.  Its great to work with such forward-thinking ownership, but I hope this wont be a unique feature for too long.
