Facebook already planning expansion of Menlo Park campus

| August 23, 2011 | 1 Comment

Shortly after Facebook announced it would be relocating its Headquarters to a former Sun Microsystems facility in Menlo Park, it was learned that they had also acquired two nearby parcels, formerly a part of Raychem’s campus. Only weeks after the first employees moved into the new HQ site, Facebook has submitted a proposal to the City of Menlo Park for the development of these adjacent parcels.

The renovation of the site once affectionately (?) known as “Sun Quentin” has been impressive so far, and Facebook has done a good job of marketing the upgrades to the public (I’ve lost count on the number of impressive photo spreads that have appeared in a wide variety of publications). They have some additional marketing challenges ahead however–Facebook will have their hands full getting this project approved. Menlo Park is not the most development-friendly city in the area, and the recent long entitlement process for the nearby Menlo Gateway development may be a template for how this process will look.
